WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR VASECTOMY

Vasectomy is an easy way to achieve permanent sterility and birth control. However it should be considered a surgical procedure. It is an operation and as such, is subject to complications just as any other surgical procedure. Complications can be painful, and may require hospitalization. Every man deciding on a vasectomy should understand the exact consequences of such a decision.

The complications that could occur following a vasectomy can include:

  1. Vasectomy failure. This may happen in 1 out of 3000-4000 cases.
  2. Continuous pain in the testicles; This is rare but could be life long and there is no cure.
  3. Infection of the testicles or incision
  4. Bleeding
  5. Damage to, or loss of a testicle
  6. Sperm granulomas. These are hard knots in the scrotum.
  7. Psychological effects. A man should not have a vasectomy unless he is ready. If your wife or girlfriend is pushing you and you really don't want to have it done you may have significant psychological problems afterwards.

Vasectomies don't cause impotence, decreased sex drive or urinary problems. The semen does not change in volume or color.

You can expect the following after surgery:

  1. Dull ache in the testicles for 48 hours
  2. Swelling, bruising, black and blue coloration
  3. Minor oozing from the incisions You will be given a prescription for analgesics and antibiotics. Take the antibiotic until finished. Take the analgesic as soon as you can. For the first day, rest and apply ice to the scrotum according to the instruction sheet.

YOU MUST USE SOME FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL UNTIL I TELL YOU IT IS OK TO STOP.

I have read and understand this form. I know the risks and benefits and alternatives to vasectomy. Dr.Somers has answered all my questions and I give him permission to perform the vasectomy.
