Vasectomy Reversal

I perform vasectomy reversals in an out patient surgery center. It takes between 3-4 hours and is done with the patient asleep. I use a microsurgical technique with an operating microscope and very fine 9-0 and 10-0 suture material. I perform either a 1, 2, or 3 layer closure depending on what is required at the time of surgery. The most important step in the operation is to check the fluid for the presence of sperm. If there are no sperm present and the fluid from the testicle is thick then a special by-pass operation is required. This is called a vasoepididymostomy. (I am the only urologist in Central Ohio that performs this operation.) There is no way to determine this before surgery.

After the surgery is completed I will send you home the same day with analgesics and antibiotics. I recommend taking 2-3 days off from work. You may experience some bruising, swelling, and dull pain in the scrotum for a few days. I insist you avoid any heavy lifting, physical exercise, or sexual activity, for 3 weeks after the surgery. I will see you at that time and if all is well give you the o.k. to resume those activities. Since it takes about 2 months to produce new sperm I'll check a semen sample in my office at that time. If there are sperm present I will talk to you about cryopreserving (freezing) a sample just in case your tubes close down in the future. This way you'll have sperm available just in case. (It is not expensive.) If there are no sperm present after 1 year I consider it a failure and we can discuss options at that time.

To maintain my operating skills I practice regularly in the microsurgical laboratory where I also teach the OSU urology residents how to perform vasectomy reversals.

I perform more vasectomy reversals in Central Ohio than any other urologist.
